Mission Statement
The mission statement of the Reverend Tommy Beardy Memorial Wee Che He Wayo Gamik Family Treatment Centre is to strengthen Native communities within the Sioux Lookout area by providing a residential program that will provide support and guidance to substance abusers and their families to understand and overcome their problems through the development of a strong spiritual base, the understanding of traditional values and beliefs and the development of attitudes and skills that will help them deal with changes within the community.
Philosophy of Services:
To create within a treatment setting a healthy and positive community environment that will assist families and individuals:
- To deal with issues of substance abuse within the family;
- To develop an atmosphere that will promote the sense of belonging,
- To build a strong basis for individual communities to develop their own community based substance abuse intervention strategies.
A Unique Whole Family Program in Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation.
Factors considered in the Treatment Programs:
- Changing lifestyles for the family and individual family members.
- Loss of Traditional beliefs for the family and individual family members.
- Loss of Spirituality for the family and the individual family members.
The most effective way of strengthening the community is to involved entire families in identifying the caused of their problems and in developing solutions that are accepted by all members of the family. In that way, individual members of families returning to their communities will be able to provide support for each other in a caring environment and will be able, through example, to provide a model for other community members. This model will be based on maintaining a strong sense of spirituality and traditional values while being equipped to cope with a changing environment.
Objectives:
- To assist individual family members in understanding the effects of substance abuse on their lives and their future.
- To assist family members in identifying the problems within the family that have led to substance abuse, gain understanding of the sign and patterns that can lead to a relapse and to help them to develop the skills to deal with the issues as they arise.
- To provide opportunities for family members to strengthen bonds within the family and to help them develop family and individual goals that will lead to a positive and healthy lifestyle.
- To assist family members in gaining a better understanding of their changing environment and in developing skills and attitudes that will help them with day to day stresses in that environment.
- To develop a better understanding of the traditional way of life of Ojibway and Cree people of Sioux Lookout area, as well as gaining understanding of how there traditional values and beliefs can help to build a healthy family life and stronger community.
- To assist the children within the family in developing confidence and self-esteem and in gaining a better understanding of the traditional values of sharing, acceptance and respect.
- To develop follow-up support services for families returning to their communities.
