The Treatment Program

The Centre's program is a six week phased program which includes

  • Pre-treatment and referral at the community level.
  • Orientation
  • Assessment of Alcohol Behaviour
  • Understanding the Disease
  • Relationships
  • Healing of Memories
  • Transition: Return Home
  • After-Care and Follow-up at the community level - for one year

Our Family Development Program consist of a six (6) weeks residential program attended by the whole family, followed by one year after care plan. Our treatment program is divided into four (4) components.

  1. Toddler’s Learning Centre
  2. Students Learning Centre
  3. Young Adult’s Program
  4. Adult’s Program

Toddler’s Learning Centre

The Toddler’s Learning Centre is to provide care for babies and preschool aged children while their parents are participating in the program. The Day Care Worker provides a caring, loving environment for the children and helps develop confidence and self esteem which promotes a strong sense off caring, sharing and respecting among the children. The Day Care Worker also assists in establishing a healthier relationship between parents and children.

Students Learning Centre

The tutor ensures that students keep abreast of their academic work while their parents attend the Adult Program. Children are tutored from kindergarten through grade twelve (12) during the intake. The tutor also promotes healing of relationship for the children with their parents, school, brother and sisters.

Young Adult Program

The Youth Worker provides learning experiences and activities for teenage children and help them understand and deal effectively with family alcoholism or drug abuse. It provides an environment with fosters the healing of relationship for the young adults with their parents, school, brothers and sister.

Adult Program

The Adult Program is for adult members of the families suffering from substance abuse. The counselling team assists with clients to gain the knowledge and skills required to deal with abuse and to become contributing members for their family and community. This component is the main part of the Family Development Centre Program and reflects the objectives.

 

PHASE 1: PRE-TREATMENT AND REFERRAL

This is down at the community level.

Pre-treatment:

  • A person has agreed to begin, or is considering treatment;
  • Undergone a process of preparation for treatment;
  • This is where the Referral Agent start discussing alcoholism and addictions.
  • They should be explaining the treatment process, rules and procedures of the centre.

(The Referral Agent should also be aware of the program where they are sending their clients)

 

Referral

  • The process of recommending a person to a treatment program after conducting an assessment.
  • The referral is still active once the client finishes the program.

PHASE 2: ORIENTATION TO TREATMENT (WEEK 1)

  • Welcome and Introduction
  • Program Orientation
  • Family Assessment (Interviews)
  • Medical Assessments
  • Alcohol and Health Presentations

In this phase, upon arrival to the Treatment Centre, clients are put in an isolation period of two weeks in which they will not leave the Centre’s premises, no incoming/outgoing call, no mail and no visitors. At this phase, clients will start to focus on themselves and their families.

PHASE 3: ASSESSMENT OF ALCOHOLIC BEHAVIOUR (WEEK 2)

  • Grief Cycle
  • Family Mapping
  • Anger
  • Lifeline

Counsellors will be doing presentations on various topics and clients will be encouraged to participate. Clients are being prepared for the next phase into the cycle.

PHASE 4: UNDERSTANDING THE DISEASE (WEEK 3)

  • Letter Exercise
  • Early Recollection

At this phase, it is the most stressful week for both clients and staff as they go back to the Early Recollection of their lives. The ER is processed in a safe place. It is an intense process.

PHASE 5: HEALING OF MEMORIES (WEEK 4)

  • Communication
  • Self-Esteem
  • Action Planning

This component of the program focuses on the client’s improvement of communication skills, self-esteem, rebuilding family relationships and setting positive goals individually and as a family unit.

PHASE 6: RELATIONSHIP (WEEK 5)

  • Family Roles
  • Anger Management
  • Parenting
  • Family Action Planning

This phase introduces clients to family systems. Topics include spiritually, budgeting, sexuality, single parenting, step-parenting and positive interaction.

PHASE 7: TRANSITION - GOING HOME PLANS (WEEK 6)

  • Identifying community support systems
  • Relapse prevention
  • Personal and Family Goals
    (aftercare plans)

At this phase, clients are given presentation on relapse and to help prepare them for departure. Clients go through many mixed motions at this phase.

PHASE 8: AFTERCARE

  • This is the period when a client leaves a forma treatment program and treatment staff is no longer involved on a regular basis.
  • The client assumes responsibility for their own recovery, hopefully with the help of family support groups, the community and the Referral Agent.
